The Center for Health Leadership and Practice (CHLP) has been a pioneer in leadership development since 1991. The Center is a leadership training, consultation, and resource center serving domestic and international health leaders and organizations. It has designed and implemented a full range of leadership development programs and organizational consultation activities targeted to the public and private health sectors and organizations. The Center began its work with the development and management of the first national public health leadership institute, the CDC/UC Public Health Leadership Institute (PHLI) from 1991-2000. Clients have included Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Bank, USAID, ASTHO, National Governors Association, the Packard Foundation, and The California Endowment.
The Center has expanded its’ leadership development work in a number of new directions including organizational consultation, mentoring programs, and succession management support. It has designed and provided intra-organizational leadership development programs for Los Angeles and Alameda County Departments of Public Health. In 2007 the Center provided a mentoring and coaching workshop for the Mexican Ministry of Health, Management Development Academy and has developed guides for mentors and protégés that are available in English and Spanish and may be downloaded from our website.
As of 2008, CHLP is a partner with University of North Carolina School of Public Health on the design and delivery of the new National Public Health Leadership Institute (Phase III). The Center’s newest project is the California/Hawaii Public Health Leadership Institute (CHPHLI). This year-long leadership institute serves the States of California and Hawaii. CHPHLI’s mission is to develop leaders in the public health sector to transform public health practice and lead organizational change in order to reduce health inequities by addressing the social determinants of health.
Carol Woltring, MPH is the founder and Executive Director of the Center for Health Leadership and Practice. Carol has made numerous presentations to National and international audiences about leadership development, mentoring, coaching, and succession planning. She has published a book on women’s leadership entitled “Journey to Leadership: Profiles of Women Leaders in Public Health” and numerous articles on leadership program evaluation and various leadership topics.
