In this presentation, Dr. Richard Kohl, co-author of MSI’s Scaling Up Framework, provides a map of how to “scale up” or expand public health programs’ impact and reach. Dr. Kohl covers what scaling up entails, illustrates its various applications, and provides key lessons learned from a maternal and child health project in India.
Richard Kohl, PhD, recently worked as a Technical Director at Management Systems International (MSI), an international development consulting firm. He was the Program Director for MSI’s scaling up portfolio and a co-author of MSI’s scaling up framework. Dr. Kohl has applied this framework to scale up small NGO-implemented pilot projects in public health in India, Africa and Eastern Europe. Prior to working at MSI, Dr. Kohl spent over 15 years working as a policy economist and as a professor of economics. Dr. Kohl holds a Ph.D in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley and a BA from Swarthmore College.
