Julie Sweetland, PhD
Dr. Julie Sweetland is a sociolinguist and a senior advisor at the FrameWorks Institute, a think tank that equips mission-driven communicators to lead productive public conversations. FrameWorks’unique approach to applied communications research shapes public discourse across the nation and around the world. Their impact was recognized in 2015 with the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions, otherwise known as the “organizationalgenius grant.” Since joining FrameWorks in 2012, Dr. Sweetland has led reframing initiatives on climate change, public education, childhood adversity, tobacco disparities, and more. Her strategic guidance has helped leading advocates, policymakers, and scientists deepen their impact. Before joining FrameWorks, she worked in progressive education reform and published research on the intersection of language and race. Dr. Sweetland is a graduate of Georgetown University and completed her MA and PhD in linguistics at Stanford University.
