Carmen Rita Nevarez, MD, MPH

Carmen R. Nevarez has experience across a broad variety of positions including public health departments, Federally Qualified Health Centers, community health, clinical services, advocacy and national organizations, serving as clinician administrator, director, board member, consultant and practitioner. Her content expertise ranges from Latinx and women’s health issues, prevention of chronic disease, and advocacy strategies. 

She has worked in both non-profit and government sectors. As past-president of the American Public Health Association, current board chair of the Langeloth Foundation, and director of the National Leadership Academy for the Public’s Health, she contributes broadly to the national conversation about health. For 40 years, she practiced medicine part‑time, providing services in low-income diverse settings.

 

Karya Lustig, MA, ISS

Karya Lustig is director of the Public Health Institute’s (PHI) Program Office CDC Cooperative Agreement (POCA), and co-director of the Center for Health Leadership & Impact (CHLI). With 25+ years of experience as a visionary and strategic leader, Lustig is driven by the foundations of social justice and equity. Creating opportunity for all individuals and families to thrive in healthy communities is the passion behind all of her work. Areas of expertise include serving as a thought leader applying strategic design and industry leading approaches (systems, triple impact, human design thinking) to solve population health challenges. Her career has been grounded in work on the most pressing public health challenges of our time including overdose prevention, homelessness, HIV prevention, and behavioral/mental health. 

 
 
 

Murlean Tucker

Web Forum Producer, Dialogue4Health

Murlean came to PHI in February 2020 and is Web Forum Producer for Dialogue4Health. She manages all aspects of the production process from its inception to the posting of the final video.  Murlean is responsible for client relations, website management and communications.  She’s the bridge between joint Web Forums with the PHI Center for Health Leadership & Impact and Dialogue4Health.

Prior to coming to PHI Murlean was responsible for supporting the production, distribution, and marketing of the medical journal MEDICC Review.  She has over 20 years of small business experience and an extensive background in information technology and graphic design.  She is a graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she earned a BA in Psychology.

Murlean is an avid lover of music especially jazz and gospel.  In her free time you can find her walking, listening to music, playing piano, creating graphics, tinkling with any type of technology and volunteering with her Church’s IT team.

 

Jeff Bornstein

Web Forum Producer

Jeff joined PHI in September 2020 with more than 30 years of experience in audio, video and collaborative digital media technologies. He will be working with us as a webinar producer for our Dialogue for Health Web Forums and other PHI national virtual events.

Jeff earned his degree in Media Communications from the Art Institute and began his career as a professional photographer for corporate events and marketing. For many years within the broadcast, corporate and educational sectors, he was able to transition into video production and editing for Sony/Columbia Studios in Hollywood, CA. Several years later he decided to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he provided end-user support and management of Media Delivery Services for several Silicon Valley tech companies. His most rewarding position was serving as technical director of Stanford University's cable TV station and the school’s centralized webinar and streaming media service.

Since living and working in the Bay Area for the past 20 years, Jeff enjoys his free time taking pictures of the natural environment, listening to classic rock, jazz and classical music while spending time with his family and friends.
